The results from a Dutch cohort study with 13,715 gastro-intestinal (GI) cancer patients show that the use of aspirin after diagnosis increases the five-year survival rate from 42 to 75 percent. Because colorectal polyps can transform into cancer, they are generally removed upon identification during colonoscopy. However, small and flat polyps are often missed during this procedure. Scientists at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC) have therefore developed a molecular technique which visualises these polyps by making them fluorescent, they write in Nature Medicine. Scientists of the Hubrecht Institute, part of the Royal Dutch Academy of Science (KNAW), and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a British research centre for genetics, have developed a 3D model for colon cancer. According to their publication in Cell, the model mimics the original tumour so accurately, it can predict which cancer therapy will work in the patient. Continue reading
