EASD 2015: New glucose monitoring device and promising study results

Monitoring blood glucose levels will be easy as never before easier for diabetics. The company DexCom has developed the first glucose monitoring device that can be linked to your smartphone, replacing the separate data receivers. The G5 Mobile Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) received the CE mark on the 14th of September and will become available in Europe in the coming weeks.

Users of the new glucose measuring device can monitor their glucose levels discretely and have the option to share their data with up to five other smartphone users. This is especially convenient for parents with diabetic children, since the device is approved for children as young as two years. To ensure security and confidentiality, all data is transferred by an encrypted Bluetooth low energy communication link combined with an authentication pairing process for all users.

The application consists of a small sensor on the abdomen which continually measures blood glucose levels. It transfers data directly to the smartphone and has a built-in low glucose alarm to warn patients helping them to avoid dangerous high and low glucose events. Furthermore, the device can be integrated with the communication platform DIASEND, which integrates the CGM data and provides reports to support diabetes management over a longer period of time.

The device will be introduced during the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) conference in Stockholm, September 14th to 18th. During this event, pharmaceutical companies Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly will also present the results of the EMPA-REG OUTCOME study. They already hinted that the use of SGLT2 inhibitors showed promising cardiovascular results in diabetics. This would be the first time SGLT2 inhibitors have better outcomes compared to common diabetes treatments.
